Fully loaded for the future – Daimler Truck AG relies on future-proof load carrier management in SAP S/4HANA

As part of a comprehensive IT transformation, Daimler Truck AG faced a complex challenge: replacing an outdated legacy system in the area of load carrier management. The goal: a centralised SAP S/4HANA system that seamlessly maps all core processes relating to the procurement, planning and provision of load carriers. The focus was on the entire supply chain – from scheduling and packaging planning to inventory management at the supplier.

Standardised platform for scheduling and transport

The particular difficulty: a go-live that could not be postponed as the old system had been switched off. Eleven plants were converted at the same time and thousands of accounts had to be migrated within a weekendwithout affecting operations.

This was not just about technology, but also about trust. The responsibility of replacing a company-wide system was enormous – both from an IT perspective and in terms of logistical precision. The changeover in just one weekend was an ambitious endeavour – with clear objectives, but without excessive attention to detail. Despite limited resources, the focus was placed on key milestones to ensure a smooth process. Training and preparatory coordination ensured that the teams were ready for action on the go-live weekend.

With status C at its side, not only was an SAP S/4HANA system introduced, but a comprehensive landscape for empties management was created. Using SAP Fiori applications and SAP TM, users can find themselves exclusively in the SAP Launchpadintuitive, role-based and scalable. The solutions used combine process knowledge, technological depth and high usability – for the operational area as well as for the system managers.

The central element: the dispatch monitor.

The crowning glory: the transport cockpit.

Around 30 users in six plants control the centrepiece of the scheduling system. Requirements are determined on the basis of specific packing instructions, stock levels are included in real time and lorry capacities are calculated dynamically. Packs can be planned and loading metres determined at the click of a mouse. The flexibility of the system makes it possible to plan according to demand and deadlines as well as for stock. The intuitive user interface, which is based on SAP Fiori, is particularly noteworthy – for modern and efficient working.

This is where SAP TM becomes tangible. Freight orders can be put together automatically, assigned to lorries using drag & drop and made ready for dispatch with just one button. Documents such as notifications, loading instructions and consignment notes are created automatically and can be sent directly by e-mail.

Not to be underestimated:

Topics such as security, authorisation management, go-live support and support concepts were also considered in detail during the course of the project.

In addition to traditional training sessions, interactive demos, guided tours and extensive documentation were also used. The status C project team also accompanied the rollout with a dedicated support team, which was also available after the go-live as a central point of contact, collecting feedback, clarifying open questions and identifying further optimisations.

It is particularly important to emphasise that the system was designed to be intuitive to use right from the start. In combination with the well thought-out training concept, this enabled productive work from day one.

"Looking back, it was a massive task. Without status C as a partner - both professionally and personally - we would never have managed it. status C was positive, calm and solution-orientated at every stage. The collaboration was simply fun."

"The project has shown what is possible when everyone involved works together with full commitment and trust. The early go-live was no coincidence, but the result of real teamwork."

"What made me particularly proud about this project is that we went live a whole month ahead of schedule - and still stayed fully within budget. It's not something you experience every day as a project manager."

"Best go-live ever" - a brilliant result.

The figures prove that the launch is having an impact: In the first seven days, eleven plants went live at the same time. 544 lorries transported over 114,000 packages – controlled via the new system. In addition, over 375,000 returnable goods account relations and more than 4.5 million delivery call-offs were successfully migrated. And that: one month earlier than planned.

And the go-live itself? “The biggest thing I’ve ever gone live in one go,” says one member of the management team. Or simply: “Best go-live ever”.

The collaboration between status C, alogis and Daimler Truck AG was characterised by trust, professionalism and the common goal of establishing a scalable, high-performance solution. The transfer of knowledge took place on an equal footing – from the recording of requirements to implementation and productive use.

The rollout at the new Halberstadt plant in April 2025 sent out a visible signal: The solution works – and it can be rolled out. What remains is a solid foundation for future developments and proof that big changes can succeed with the right team.
