What is SAP Logistics Management (SAP LGM)?

SAP Logistics Management (SAP LGM) is a standalone, cloud-based SaaS solution from SAP that runs on the SAP Business Technology Platform (SAP BTP). It combines core functions from warehouse and transportation processes into a single solution. Important to note: SAP LGM is not a replacement for SAP EWM. SAP positions the solution as a deliberately lean complement for warehouses with low complexity—not as a transitional technology.

Functionally, SAP LGM covers four core areas:

  1. Warehouse and inventory management (including warehouse layout visualization),

  2. Inbound Logistics (Goods Receiving, Putaway, Returns),

  3. Outbound logistics (picking, packing, transport dispatch), and

  4. Network collaboration with partners and carriers.

For which warehouses is SAP LGM suitable?

SAP LGM really shines in situations where the feature set of SAP EWM would be excessive.

Typical use cases:

  • Many small to very small locations: small regional warehouses, spare parts warehouses, or decentralized shipping locations.

  • Standardized, manual processes: goods receipt, putaway, order picking, and goods issue without deep automation.

  • Desire for process digitization: locations that currently use standalone solutions or spreadsheets and are to be integrated with SAP.

The last scenario is particularly interesting from a strategic perspective. SAP LGM and SAP EWM are not mutually exclusive but rather complementary: A corporation can operate its main warehouse with the full process depth of SAP EWM while simultaneously digitizing ten small shipping locations in a lean manner via SAP LGM. This hybrid architecture—SAP EWM in the main warehouse, SAP LGM in the satellite locations — is emerging as a recurring pattern.

SAP LGM vs. SAP EWM: The Key Difference.

The most common question in practice is: Do I need SAP LGM, SAP EWM—or should I run both solutions in parallel? This comparison provides some initial guidance:

What is a “lean EWM”?

As soon as EWM comes into play, a second term emerges: “Lean EWM.” This refers to SAP Extended Warehouse Management (often implemented as “embedded SAP EWM” in SAP S/4HANA), which is deliberately operated without its complex scenarios.

Typically, the following are omitted:

  • Material Flow System (MFS) for the direct integration of conveyor and automation technology.

  • Wave management for the bundled control of large order volumes.

  • In-depth specialized processes such as comprehensive quality management or complex putaway and retrieval strategies.

What remains is an SAP EWM that covers the core processes—goods receipt, putaway, picking, and goods issue. Experience shows that, in this streamlined form, a lean SAP EWM can be implemented just as quickly as SAP LGM, provided that SAP EWM is already in use at at least one location.

Licensing: As an embedded EWM, it is included in SAP S/4HANA.

Decision Matrix: When Do I Need SAP LGM? When Is a lean SAP EWM a Better Choice?

Use SAP LGM if...

  • ... your warehouse remains small, manually operated, and consistently lean

  • ... your warehouse is intended to operate as a satellite facility alongside a large EWM main warehouse

Use SAP EWM if...

  • ... your warehouse is lean today, but could become more complex in the future

  • ... their warehouse is already using EWM and is connecting another location
