If you can't stand the heat, you shouldn't work in the kitchen.
When the heat is on, dedication, cool heads and a pragmatic approach are called for: Because this is the only way to implement a lean, standards-based S/4HANA solution with Embedded EWM at one of the top companies in the chemical industry in an extremely short project duration of 8 months.
Welcome to a champion of the German midmarket
The family-owned company of Wendel GmbH, based in Dillenburg in central Hesse, has earned an excellent reputation as Germany's largest manufacturer of enamels, glazes and engobes. A pioneer in the industry, a consistent innovator since 1932, expertise from raw materials to quality products, a leader in enamels and roof tile glazes in Europe, the world market leader for cast powder enamels - these are just some of the top attributes that describe this company. How do you stay at the top for so long? By always moving forward. With good ideas, strong products and superior processes.
New requirements demanded new solutions
Wendel realized that its existing ERP system no longer adequately supported its business processes. Increasing specialization and constantly growing customer needs called for optimized processes ranging from raw material storage to production supply processes and shipping. Production and purchasing were also put to the test. All in all, a demanding task, little time and many tricky challenges - a case entirely to the taste of status C and Suportis.
Nothing half-hearted - was the motto of the two partners
Whether logistics consulting, SAP consulting and development, project management, support in setting up the system or going-live support, all in sweltering heat and at a 1200-degree oven: the professionals from status C did not let themselves be disturbed by complex requirements or adverse circumstances in their crafts. All areas from purchasing to production, warehouse and shipping as well as sales were converted to S/4HANA - including the integration of an embedded EWM for production supply and picking. The specialists from Suportis AG in Ludwigsburg were at work for the Finance and Controlling area. They implemented the modules, trained the employees and took over the follow-up support.
No successful project without strong teamwork
What counts in every industry is even more true at Wendel: The chemistry must be right. Flexible, pragmatic, direct feedback, constructive criticism and involvement of the operational area: This is how the ideas and processes were intensively discussed and worked out with each other. For the Wendel employees in particular, who had previously operated with completely different workflows for many years, this represented a real challenge - their wishes and comments played a major role in the process planning. Through intensive training as well as on-the-job training, the users were safely prepared for the new, fully integrated system, the new interface and the modified process flows.
Efficiency has many aspects to it
Planning on paper or on demand? Production as a black box from the point of view of materials management and controlling? Once upon a time this was the case. In all modesty: in a very short time we achieved together in Dillenburg a powerful and sustainable result. The new S/4HANA system significantly increases efficiency and optimizes processes. To name just a few of the highlights of the project: end-to-end batch processing for complete traceability, apps for order control and feedback in production, on-premises instead of cloud solution, end-to-end mobile processing in SAP EWM, and the integration of the mixing and weighing system with S/4HANA.
